Stormwater management facilities like detention and retention ponds play an important role in minimizing the damage that stormwater runoff can cause to private property or our community's waters.

Private property owners are responsible for maintaining their stormwater facilities so that they can function as they were designed during a rain event. Common maintenance problems like overgrown outlet structures, deteriorating banks, and litter accumulation can keep a facility from handling runoff safely.

Athens-Clarke County Stormwater inspects private stormwater facilities on an annual basis. All recommended repairs are the responsibility of the property owner.
