2007 Outstanding Stormwater Program of the Year
Apr 27, 2007 by Natalie White
ACC Stormwater wins statewide award.
On March 27, the Athens-Clarke County Stormwater Management Program was awarded the 2007 Outstanding Stormwater Program of the Year for Phase II communities by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals and the Georgia Chapter of the American Water Resources Association.
The Outstanding Stormwater Management Program of the Year Award is handed out annually by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals Stormwater Committee and the Georgia Section of the American Water Resources Association. Awards are presented to both Phase I and Phase II communities, and are judged based on their efforts above and beyond permit requirements in the measures of pollution prevention/good housekeeping for municipal operations, illicit discharge detection and elimination; construction site runoff control; post-construction storm water management in new development and redevelopment; and public education, outreach, involvement and participation on storm water impacts.
The selection committee highlighted ACC Stormwater’s efforts in education in all aspects of the program. Our outreach and education activities were particularly cited as outstanding efforts to promote clean water and watershed health. Our program has developed and used a number of ACC-specific educational materials to reach our community. The Stormwater Detective book and the “A Day at the Stream” puppet show reach elementary school children, while fliers and letters are used to educate businesses about our policies. Training sessions and workshops are another important part of our program to help citizens do what they can to improve water quality. Perhaps most importantly, we strive to educate ourselves as a program in order to better educate and serve the community.
