Stormdrain Decaling Project in Five Points

Nov 8, 2006 by Natalie White

The Junior Ladies Garden Club decals stormdrains to educate residents about stormwater pollution.

The Junior Ladies Garden Club labeled 40 stormdrains in the Five Points area last Friday with “No Dumping” decals to help citizens in the neighborhood be aware of stormwater pollution. Many people don’t realize that stormdrains carry rainwater directly into rivers and streams without first going to a water processing plant. That means that anything and everything poured into a stormdrain or even onto the street can end up in a river near you. Oil, paint, and chemicals are obvious pollutants, but less apparent are pollutants like the soapsuds that travel down the driveway into the street when we wash our cars outside. Leaves are a top river pollutant in the fall, and as many neighborhoods have seen, leaves can clog stormdrains and cause flooding. It is illegal to dump or sweep anything into stormdrains, but enforcement of these laws in every neighborhood in the county at all times is just not possible. The most important first step is educating the public about stormdrain pollution with projects like stormdrain decaling. Look for these colorful round markers downtown and in local neighborhoods. If the stormdrains in your neighborhood aren’t labeled, you can email info@accstormwater.com to schedule a project with your friends or a local organization. Thank you to the Junior Ladies Garden Club – they did a great job helping Athens-Clarke County residents learn about stormwater pollution!
