Gardens help manage stormwater runoff
Are you looking for a way to handle the water that drains off your home’s rooftop or driveway when it rains? A rain garden may be the perfect solution for your yard. Rain gardens are landscape areas that are specially designed to contain stormwater runoff. Athens-Clarke County Stormwater will offer a rain garden workshop beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, in the Callaway Auditorium at the State Botanical Garden. There is no charge for the workshop, but participants must call (706) 613-3440 to register.
The workshop is offered by Athens-Clarke Stormwater, the State Botanical Garden, and the Athens-Clarke Extension Service. Participants will learn the proper sizing of a rain garden, which types of plants to use in the garden, and the best locations for rain gardens.
In addition to helping manage drainage, rain gardens also help our rivers and streams. Stormwater runoff from your home and lawn can flush sediment, fertilizers, or debris into our streams. Rain gardens can act as a filter, removing harmful pollutants before stormwater makes its way into our local waters.
The rain garden workshop is offered as part of the month-long GreenFest celebration. GreenFest is an annual community event promoting environmental awareness. For a complete schedule of GreenFest events, visit www.athensgreenfest.org.
