Government Agencies Unveil New Digital Flood Map for Clarke County

Flood risk information open house to be held
Local, state and federal government agencies have partnered to prepare new digital flood maps for Clarke County properties. These new maps and flood insurance information will be presented at a public meeting on March 8.
Athens-Clarke County, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have worked to complete a new Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) for Athens-Clarke County, including the cities of Athens, Bogart, and Winterville. This FIS includes elevation profiles, charts, and a narrative report of local flooding to be used by permit officials for development in the floodplain.
This new insurance study and its preliminary insurance rate map will be presented at an Open House, to be held from 6:30 – 8 pm on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, in the Planning Auditorium of the Athens-Clarke County Governmental Building, located at 120 West Dougherty Street, in Athens. At the Open House representatives from local government, DNR, and FEMA will provide the most current information about Athens-Clarke County?s flood risk, flood insurance, floodplain development regulations, floodplain mapping, and the timeline for DFIRM adoption. The new countywide floodplain maps will be displayed.
Property owners, individuals living in or near the 100-year floodplain, realtors, lenders, insurance agents may find this Open House particularly informative. All interested persons are welcome.
