Volunteers Project Keeps Drains Clean
Apr 9, 2005 by Cail Hammons
Educational markers placed throughout downtown
More than twenty volunteers worked on Saturday to help keep area storm drains free of pollutants. The volunteers installed educational storm drain markers on stormwater inlets throughout downtown.
The markers let potential polluters know that anything dumped into a storm drain eventually makes it’s way into a river or stream.
“Many people believe that storm drains are connected to the wastewater treatment plant, and that the water collected is treated before it is discharged,” explains Cail Hammons, the county’s stormwater education coordinator. “This simply is not the case.”
More than one hundred of the markers were placed downtown. The decals distinguish which of Athens-Clarke’s eighteen drainage basins the runoff drains to. In downtown, stormwater either drains to the North Oconee River or to Tanyard Creek.
The downtown storm drain decal project is part of the month-long GreenFest celebration. GreenFest is an annual community event promoting environmental awareness. For a complete schedule of GreenFest events, visit http://www.athensgreenfest.org.
