Volunteers Needed to Help Keep Pollution Out of Streams

Downtown project to place decals on storm drains
This Saturday volunteers will take to the streets to protect our streams. Residents are encouraged to participate in a downtown storm drain decal project.
Many people do not realize that storm drains are a direct connection to rivers and streams. Anything that goes into a storm drain in Athens may eventually find its way into the Oconee River. It is important to keep pollutants like litter, yard clippings, and pet waste out of storm drains.
To help spread the word about keeping storm drains clean, many towns are turning to stencils or decals that discourage dumping. In Athens-Clarke, these decals tell which of the eighteen drainage basins the drain empties into.
While volunteers work to mark storm drains downtown, students at Cedar Shoals High School will place the markers on storm inlets on the school campus.
Volunteers are still needed for the downtown decal project on Saturday, April 9. Workers will meet at the Dougherty Street Government Building at 120 West Dougherty Street for training and materials at 10 a.m. For more information or to register, call (706) 613-3440.
The downtown storm drain decal project is offered as part of the month-long GreenFest celebration. GreenFest is an annual community event promoting environmental awareness. For a complete schedule of GreenFest events, visit http://www.athensgreenfest.org.
